There are so many elements of design that surround us. Too many to count. If we stopped for a moment a day to observe our surroundings, then perhaps we would discover a lot more than we thought was there.
For instance, the types, numbers, and sizes of doors. The locks, the cracks, the knobs, the pulls--there are so many kinds.
 
The idea is silly perhaps. Observe and think about a door. Where can it take you? Where can it not? They can welcome and they can reject. We wonder what's behind them and other times we'd rather not know.
 
In considering Emerson, I wonder what we would discover if we were openers of doors in terms of observing our surroundings. What architecture, materials, and elements would we find? What would we notice? This is what I saw:
